How To Apply Mascara

How To Apply Mascara

Let's talk mascara!

It's an essential item for any cosmetic bag, but more often than not it is a product widely misused.
It is a very important makeup product that is responsible for drawing attention to your eyes, if it is applied correctly.

I've typed up some very easy steps on how to apply your mascara properly, avoiding the very common eye makeup disasters that you see so often on others.

Step 1. Curling.
I've always found that if you curl your lashes first before applying your mascara you will an amazing definition in your lashes. They will stand out much more curled and trust me people will notice this small detail.

Now you need to do this before applying the mascara because if you wait to do it after, your eyelashes may stick to the curler and get yanked out. This is not what you want to have happen. It will take a very long time for those lashes to grow back. It can also be very painful to have your lashes pulled off from your eyelids.

Step 2. Mascara color matters.
You need to chose a mascara color that is no deeper than 2 or 3 shades darker than the natural color of your eyebrows.

Step 3. No clumping.
Always apply your mascara in thin , light layers. If your goal is to apply your mascara without clumping here is your chance to learn. Rushing and applying it in one or two thick layers, makes your eyelashes all clumpy and goopy. Think instead of applying it in light feathery brush strokes, build up the product a little at a time.

Never, ever sweep the mascara across your lashes in a side to side motion. Instead start at the base of your eyelashes and gently wiggle the mascara brush upward to really separate all your lashes, this will make them look much fuller, more natural look without leaving any clumps behind on the tips of your lashes.

Step 4. Be delicate to your bottoms.
Not everyone applies mascara to their lower lashes and some makeup looks don't require this. But if you chose to apply mascara to your lower lashes, remember to be delicate to your bottoms. Take the mascara wand and start at the root of your bottom lashes, as with your upper lashes, and lightly pull the brush downward. Be careful to not apply too much mascara since it will rub off and give you dark smudges or flaking under your lower lashes. I'm a great fan of Marylin Manson and don't like to see women imitate his look without intentions.

Also keep in mind that one layer is enough when applying mascara to your bottom lashes. There is no need to apply several layers as compared to your upper lashes. Just enough to add definition to your eyes, one or two coats is just great.

I believe mascara is one of the most important quick pick me up you can apply to your lashes to really draw attention to your face.

With these 4 Steps in mind you should be able to accomplish the application of your mascara without any problems.

A problem I encounter with my mascara application is that curling doesn't work the first time around...especially since my hair is naturally straight and my eyelashes are turn downwards...

Have you considered using a heated eyelashe curler?

I always use a curler. I also heat it up just a bit with my hairdryer, testing it on my hand before using it of course :)

I personally dont like mascara in the lower lashes. I think it looks poor and wayyy too artificial.
Samantha XoXo said to Thifa:
Ahh Thifa you must be blessed with long lashes! For the majority of us who are not so bless, any extension of our tiny lashes pleases us. ;)

I agree - mascara is a daily must for me! When I have no time for makeup or I'm just popping out quickly, I stick to mascara, lip gloss and cheek stain, and I'm out the door :-)
